The light curves of the short–period variable stars in the Carina dwarf Spheroidal galaxy

چکیده

The light curves of the high–amplitude, short– period variable stars discovered by Mateo et al. (1998) in the Carina dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy were re-analyzed to refine their properties and compare them with those of galactic stars. In spite of a different pulsation mode established by means of different PLM relationships, the Fourier parameters did not reveal a separation between the two groups; however, they are slightly different from those of galactic stars. The possibility that some of these stars are double–mode pulsators is suggested.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Wfpc2 Observations of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present our analysis of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations in F555W (∼V ) and F814W (∼I) of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The resulting V vs V−I color-magnitude diagrams reach V ≈27.1 mag. The reddening of Carina is estimated to be E(V−I) = 0.08±0.02 mag. A new estimate of the distance modulus of Carina, (m − M)0 = 19.87±0.11 mag, has been derived primari...

The mass and velocity anisotropy of the Carina, Fornax, Sculptor and Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxies

We model the large kinematic data sets for the four Milky Way dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites: Carina, Fornax, Sculptor and Sextans, recently published by Walker et al. The member stars are selected using a reliable dynamical interloper removal scheme tested on simulated data. Our member selection is more restrictive than the one based on metallicity indicators as it removes not only contami...

A New View of the Dwarf Spheroidal Satellites of the Milky Way from Vlt/flames1: Where Are the Very Metal Poor Stars?

As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) Programme, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early Univ...

We have analyzed deep B and V photometry of the Carina dwarf spheroidal reaching below the old main-sequence turnoff to V ∼ 25. Using simulated color-magnitude diagrams to model a range of star formation scenarios, we have extracted a detailed, global star formation history. Carina experienced three significant episodes of star formation at ∼ 15 Gyr, 7 Gyr, and 3 Gyr. Contrary to the generic pi...
